About Steven Sebring

Steven Sebring (b. 1966) is an American photographer, director and self-proclaimed ‘photoscient’. Always passionate about the still and moving image Sebring began his career in fashion photography, and it was in 1995 that Spin Magazine commissioned Sebring to photograph the singer-songwriter Patti Smith. This encounter would culminate in Sebring filming Patti Smith over 11 years, resulting in the documentary Dream of Life (2008) - a directorial debut that earned him a Sundance Award for Excellence in Cinematography and a Primetime Emmy nomination. A collaboration that also produced Patti Smith Complete: Lyrics, Reflections, and Notes for the Future (1999), the artwork for three of her albums including Twelve (2007) and the series of photographs titled Patti Smith Objects of Life.

For more than twenty-five years Steven Sebring has collaborated with legendary visionaries and innovators in the fashion, music, art, sports and film industries as well as the Smithsonian museum and PBS. Sebring's idiosyncratic collaborations include Patti Smith, Rodney Mullen, Jack White, Coco Rocha, while contributing photographic work to Vogue, Vanity Fair, W, and directing international campaigns for MAC, Estee Lauder, Coach, DKNY, Tiffany's and more. Published work includes Lalanne (2006), Bygone Days (2005), and Naked Flowers Exposed (1997).

Sebring works and lives in New York. A selection of his photography and design furniture is now available at Newel New York and at Newel.com
