About John Henry Belter

John Henry Belter (1804-1863) was a renowned American furniture designer and cabinetmaker who played a significant role in the development of the Rococo Revival style in the mid-19th century. Born in Germany in 1804, Belter emigrated to the United States in 1833 and settled in New York City.

Consists of a resurrection of many previous periods and revival imitations including: Gothic, Tudor, Elizabethan, Rococo, and Neoclassic style. This period had a focus on dark woods, heavy fabrics, embellishment, engagement with newly developed imitation materials that were facilitated by the Industrial Revolution, and a tendency towards eclecticism.

Rosewood

A close-grain tropical hardwood with a distinct, floral scent. It is typically a dark red color with occasional violet and black variegations. It is prized for both fine furniture and instrument-making.

Stretcher

A stretchers is a stabilizing support rail which runs horizontally between furniture legs. These often form X, H, or Y shapes in conjunction with the outside rails.
