Chippendale

Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779) was one of the great cabinet makers in 18th-century England. His work shows a refinement of Georgian styles, influenced by the Gothic, Chinese, and French rococo. First of his era to extensively use mahogany rather than walnut, the prevailing wood in the Early Georgian period. In 1754 he published "The Gentlemen's and Cabinetmaker's Directory," illustrating the styles of the day.

Commode

French form mimicking an English chest-of-drawers, dating from the mid 17th-century and very popular in the 18th century. Fashion greatly determined variances in styles and decoration, but commodes generally are wider than they are tall.

Lowboy

Chest of drawers or small dressing table mounted on short typically cabriole legs. Lowboys tend to be about three feet high and resemble the lower portion of a highboy.

Burl

Burl is a type of wood that comes from an irregular growth on a tree. Burl wood is usually cut in a thin veneer form to show its exquisite detail. Burl wood is most common in walnut, elm and yew. Burl wood has been used to decorate furniture for centuries and was highly popular during the Biedermeier period.
