Victorian

Period in English furniture during the reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901. Consists of a resurrection of many previous periods and revival imitations including: Gothic, Tudor, Elizabethan, Rococo, and Neoclassic style. This period had a focus on dark woods, heavy fabrics, embellishment, engagement with newly developed imitation materials that were facilitated by the Industrial Revolution, and a tendency towards eclecticism.

Relief

Relief work is a form of molded, carved or stamped decoration raised from the surface of a piece of furniture to form a pattern

Basalt

Black basalt is a dark stoneware body invented by Josiah Wedgwood in 1768. Basalt was made from reddish-brown clay which burned black in firing and attributed its dark rich color to the addition of manganese in the clay. Wedgewood often used basalt as a material for making antique reproductions of classical forms including "Etruscan" vases, portrait medallions, plaques, library busts and candlesticks.
